A series of artistic commissions are being hidden throughout North Yorkshire - for you to find!
Chrysalis Arts have established a new category of geocaching, the Geo Art Cache. Geocaching is a high-tech treasure hunting game using GPS devices. The basic idea is to locate hidden containers, called geocaches, which are usually sited outdoors, often in remote places, and then share your experiences online. The Geo Art Cache project involves a new series of geocache trails created by artists, which will take participants on a series of walks and journeys across North Yorkshire.
Artists have been asked to create new work, which responds to place and to the overall themes of the project: art, heritage and quality of environment. Each commission responds in different ways to develop new work within the geocaching genre.
This project aims to attract new visitors to North Yorkshire through the creation of innovative contemporary art and to appeal to a wide, crossover audience to provide a unique way to explore the cultural and environmental landscape of North Yorkshire.
Some of the caches will aim to engage specifically with families or those new to geocaching, while others will appeal to more experienced geocachers and walkers.
Rick Faulkner, Director of Chrysalis Arts says, “ We are aiming to create a high quality art experience that is a fun and engaging activity and will inspire people to be creative whilst enjoying North Yorkshire’s spectacular landscapes and wider cultural offer. Through this project we are bringing new and innovative art to rural parts of North Yorkshire and we hope we can appeal to a range of different audiences in bringing together the art of geocaching and cultural participation.“
The Geo Art Cache project will be launched in May 2011, to find out more on the programme of events and how to get involved, visit www.geoartcache.com
